The Slapy dam is located near Slapy on the Vltava, about 30 kilometers as the crow flies south of the Czech capital Prague and is part of the Vltava Cascade .
The dam is a concrete gravity dam with four weir openings as flood relief . These are each 15 meters wide and equipped with pressure segment weirs . In the event of a flood, for example, up to 3000 m³ of water per second can be discharged through these openings. The dam is used to generate electricity, provide drinking and utility water and regulate runoff.
The power plant with three Kaplan turbines is located under the flood relief channels. Originally it was planned to equip the dam with an elevator for ships up to 300 tons. However, this has not yet been built. Small ships up to five tons can use a towing device to avoid the obstacle.
In 1954 the villages Královská, Moráň, Kocanda, Živohošť, Ústí, Smilovice, Kobylníky, Cholín, Trenčín and Oboz were dissolved as a result of the flooding of the Vltava valley.
