history

In place of a weir , the power plant was built between 1907 and 1910 by the architect László Székely and the project engineer Emil Szilard to use the water power of the Bega . It was one of the first hydroelectric power plants in Europe and the first of its kind in what is now the territory of Romania.

The power station was on May 3, 1910, three 600  hp strong water turbines of the Hungarian producer Quite commissioned. The adjustable weir made of steel plates has a storage height of 5.6 meters, with a flow of 36 cubic meters of water per second it has an output of 1200  kW . In May 2010 the operator of the power plant, Colterm Timișoara , celebrated the centennial of the facility.

From 1923 to 1958, the power station was also connected to the Timișoara tram network by Line 1 . The area used to be a popular excursion destination, and in the immediate vicinity there was also the popular bathing beach, the Great Beach ( called Ștrand or Plajă in Romanian ).
