The water reservoir on the Mathildenhöhe is a building in Darmstadt .

History and description

The water reservoir is in the years 1877-1880 according to plans by engineer Otto Lueger - on the top of the hitherto pristine parks Mathildenhoehe - landscaped elevated tank . It consists of two chambers built in hard-burnt clinker , each with six barrel vaults connected by longitudinal straps . Various original fixtures such as the standpipe and the cast iron spiral staircase have been preserved.

Originally the water reservoir - partly with a visible facade and a balustrade - was designed as a viewing platform . In 1907 and 1908 the reservoir was built over with the exhibition halls.

Monument protection

The water reservoir is a typical example of a hydraulic structure in Darmstadt in the second half of the 19th century. For architectural, industrial and urban history reasons, the water reservoir is a cultural monument .
