The water cannon 10000 (WaWe 10 for short) is a type of water cannon used by the German police . The series is the successor to the 9000 water cannon . A prototype was handed over to the Federal Police in November 2008, and the first five series vehicles were delivered by 2011. The manufacturer is the Austrian company Rosenbauer . The primary area of application of the water cannon is the use of direct physical force against people in the context of police security , especially during demonstrations and other major events.

procurement

The procurement is based on a resolution of the Conference of Interior Ministers of the federal and state governments from 2005. Rosenbauer, a company specializing in fire fighting vehicles , won the Europe-wide tender by the procurement office of the Federal Ministry of the Interior in early summer 2008 .

The vehicles were initially tested in Hamburg and Berlin and went into series production from 2010. The replacement of the previous vehicles should be completed by 2019. Initially, 50 vehicles have been ordered with an option for a total of 78. A vehicle should cost around 900,000 euros. The actual procurement costs in 2013 and 2015 were stated by the state of Bremen at around 1.1 million euros per vehicle. The water cannons are part of the material equipment of the riot police (such as the other vehicles) of the federal states. This is financed from the budget of the Federal Ministry of the Interior and procured by it. The federal government makes the equipment available to the states. The riot police in Hamburg and Saxony were the first to receive the new type of water cannon. On February 10, 2011, the Hamburg Interior Senator Heino Vahldieck presented the water cannon to the Hamburg Police President Werner Jantosch . The water cannon was introduced in Saxony on April 28, 2011.

technology

construction

The water cannon 10000 is mounted on the Mercedes-Benz Actros - all-wheel drive chassis. It is 3.7 m high, 9.9 m long and 2.55 m wide. The drive has an output of 300 kW (approx. 408  hp ). The permissible total weight is 31 t. In the design of the vehicle, the protruding front with its sloping windshield catches the eye. Smooth outer walls should prevent the WaWe 10 from climbing and the sloping roof shape should not provide a hold for Molotov cocktails . The cabin consists of aluminum sheeting on an aluminum frame. The protective glazing of the cabin is made of polycarbonate . In addition, one has air conditioning installed. The crew consists of up to five people: a commander, a driver, an observer and two operators for the water monitors.

water

The WaWe 10 is equipped with a heatable 10,000 liter tank and has three launch tubes, two at the front with a throughput of up to 1200 l / min and a throw of 65 meters with 20 bar pressure and one at the rear with up to 900 l / min and a throwing distance of 50 meters. The pumping system for the throwers is driven by its own motor (Deutz TCD 2012L06), so that, as with the previous model, water can be fired regardless of the driving situation.

In contrast to the previous models, in addition to regulating the water pressure, it is also possible to change the spray pattern, which enables better water dosing during use, e.g. B. extinguishing burning barricades. Another innovation are surveillance cameras that record the surroundings of the vehicle, as well as a microphone system on the vehicle, with which the loudspeaker announcements can be checked for intelligibility and also logged.

Irritants

Two Digidos admixing systems for irritants, some of which are harmful to health, such as CN or CS stock solution, allow admixing rates of 0.1 to 1.5 percent. They can be mixed in and given out as an aerosol . There are two 60 liter irritant containers in the equipment room.

Problems with the protective glass

In March 2014, the Thuringian police carried out a trial operation. Police officers threw eggs, tennis balls and PET bottles at the water cannon . According to a report by the MDR , the polycarbonate armored glass on the police vehicle suffered three fist-sized damage. The state police headquarters could not provide an explanation.
