Wassylij Fedak
Wassyly ( Ukrainian Василій , secular name: Василь Васильович Федак Wassyl Wassylowytsch Fedak * October 19 jul. / 1. November 1909 greg. In Kadubiwzi , Duchy of Bukovina , Austria-Hungary ; † 10. January 2005 in Winnipeg , Canada ) was a Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan and Primate .
Life
Wassyl Wassylowytsch Fedak was born in Kadubiwzi in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Chernivtsi .
His family came to Canada in May 1912 and settled in the village of Sheho, Saskatchewan , where Fedak received his education and teacher training.
He married in 1932 and until 1941 worked as a teacher at rural schools in Saskatchewan Province, where many Ukrainian emigrants lived.
From 1941 he studied at the theological seminary . He was ordained a deacon on September 27, 1944 and a priest on October 1, 1944 , after which he served as a pastor in the provinces of Manitoba and Ontario . From 1951 he was rector of the St. Vladimir Cathedral Congregation in Hamilton, where he served for 29 years. In 1976 his wife Paraskevia died, with whom he had three children: Eugene, Yaroslav and Emil.
In 1977 he was made a protopresbyter and in 1978 he was elected bishop of the Extraordinary Council of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church in Canada .
After the death of Metropolitan Andrei (Metiuk), on July 15, 1985, he was elected Primate of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church in Canada: Metropolitan of Winnipeg and All of Canada.
Under the leadership of Metropolitan Vasylij, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Canada entered the jurisdiction of the Patriarch of Constantinople on April 1, 1990, and was thus in full communion with universal Orthodoxy. The metropolitan made great efforts to unite the Ukrainian Orthodox Churches - in 1995, on his initiative, a permanent conference of Ukrainian Orthodox bishops outside Ukraine was established.
