The Waterton River is an approximately 130 km long left tributary of the Belly River in Montana (USA) and Alberta (Canada).
The Waterton River has its source in the Rocky Mountains in Glacier National Park, USA . The river flows mainly in a north-northeast direction. In the upper reaches it flows through Nahsukin Lake , Upper Waterton Lake and Lower Waterton Lake . The US-Canadian-Canadian border runs through Upper Waterton Lake. It then flows through the Waterton Lakes National Park . The Waterton River flows through the Great Plains in a north-northeast direction. After about 75 km the river to Waterton Reservoir is dammed. As part of the Waterton-St. Mary Headworks System will direct irrigation water to the Belly River and from the Belly River on to the St. Mary Reservoir , located on the Saint Mary River . The Waterton River joins the Belly River on the left side 7.5 km north of Stand Off . Although the Waterton River has three times the discharge, it is considered a tributary of the Belly River.
