Watts S. Humphrey

Watts Sherman Humphrey (born July 4, 1927 in Battle Creek , Michigan ; † October 28, 2010 in Sarasota , Florida ) was an American computer scientist and an authority in the field of software process improvement . He was also a long-time senior manager in software development at IBM .

Among other things, he was responsible for the development of the Capability Maturity Model (CMM for short) and the software development methods Personal Software Process (PSP) and Team Software Process (TSP). Under his leadership of software development at IBM, the first software licenses were introduced at the end of the 1960s.

Humphrey was a Fellow of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University , Pittsburgh . In 2003 he was awarded the National Medal of Technology by George W. Bush for his services .
