history

The existence of the rural settlement village has been documented since 1195, when it was first mentioned as "Wattekesheim". Later it is also called "Watzem" . The name "Watzen" still exists in the East Westphalian dialect of the region among the inhabitants and in the neighboring villages .

Since the incorporation, which came into force on March 1, 1974, the place has been part of the municipality of Uehrde.

Culture and sights

  • The most striking building and landmark of the village is the church, which stands like a castle on a hill in the middle of the village and is visible far into the region. In parts it dates from the 12th century and was probably founded by the Welfenhaus . It is also said that the Watzum church was built by the Knights Templar . Later it was under the patronage of the Teutonic Order
Watzum manor
  • The townscape is also characterized by the Watzum manor, it was built in 1704 by the Braunschweig master builder Hermann Korb and has a spacious manor park. The von Weferlingen family of ministers had held the manor since the Middle Ages . An illegitimate daughter of Duke Heinrich the Younger married into the von Weferlingen family in the 16th century. With the help of her dowry , the village could be rebuilt after it was destroyed by the Schmalkaldic War . The von Weferlingen family has now died out.
  • The Möhringsche and Eppersche Hofs are also worth mentioning as other striking buildings. They are both subject to monument preservation.

Personalities

  • Heinrich Gravenhorst (1823–1898), beekeeper, inventor of the Gravenhorst arched sleeve, born in Watzum
