Waveland is a city in Hancock County , Mississippi on the Gulf of Mexico in the Mississippi metropolitan area of Gulfport-Biloxi. Waveland covers an area of 17.6 square kilometers and had 6,674 inhabitants in 2,731 households before Hurricane Katrina (according to a census in 2000). The city's 3,442 houses were completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005 , and according to official figures about 50 residents drowned. 36 years earlier, in 1969, Waveland had been badly damaged by Hurricane Camille .
The city is being rebuilt. The Silver Slipper Casino with three high-end restaurants and a snack bar was opened on November 9, 2006 on the coastal road of Waveland, following the Bayou Caddy's Jubliee Casino which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina .
history
Waveland was a pirate base in the 19th century . In 1802, a New Orleans- based merchant who was a Gold Coast Pirate leader and a business friend of Jean Laffite built the Pirate's House , which lasted until Hurricane Katrina . Allegedly an underground passage led from the house to the seashore, and the house is said to have been a hideout for persecuted pirates.

Hurricane Katrina
The Hurricane Katrina had on 29 August 2005 h wind speed of 217 km / and caused up to 6.70 meter high tidal wave that flooded the Waveland and completely destroyed. The hurricane winds raged for 17 hours and the tidal wave reached a height of + 0.3 - 7 m. All 3,442 buildings were torn apart.
The city had previously been evacuated. Residents who refused to be evacuated drowned in their own homes by the tidal wave or were carried away by the tidal wave with the rubble of their home.
