We the People is the debut album by the US crossover band Flipsyde . It was released on July 12, 2005 by Interscope and was named Hip-Hop Album of the Year by the Washington Post . On March 10th of the next year a new version was released , on which the hit single Happy Birthday is located.
history
After the discovery by Jimmy Iovine in 2003, the band worked on their first album for the next few years.
On August 1, 2005, the first single Someday from the album We The People was released . "Someday" is the official song for the Winter Olympics , which took place in Turin from February 10th to 26th, 2006 . For the new function of the song, a video adapted to the games was shot.
On February 3, 2006 Flipsyde reported back with the second single Happy Birthday from a new edition of their album We The People . In consultation with tATu, they not only borrowed the melody from their song Gomenasai from the album Dangerous and Moving , but also used the chorus sung by Julija Wolkowa and Jelena Katina . This was then sung by Wolkowa when recording. But then both tATu singers sang at live performances. The song stayed at number 1 in the Czech charts for three weeks. The next single was Trumpets , which was released in a separate single version - Trumpets (Never Be The Same Again) - on July 7, 2006.
In addition, Flipsyde released two bonus tracks in Japan and India.
On November 24, 2006, the fifth single Angel was released.
style
The genre of We the People cannot be clearly defined. The album is heavily influenced by Latin American styles such as merengue by the guitarists with Chilean roots . The MC Piper represents hip-hop and singer Steve Knight represents rock, or sometimes soul. The song Someday is the average Flipsyde title: a crossover of rock and hip-hop. Spun, on the other hand, is heavily influenced by Latin. With No More and Angel there are only two quiet pop songs on the album. The single Trumpets cannot be classified anywhere and created something completely new: The quiet bass guitar is set on an endless loop, the DJ adds irregular beats, while later a trumpet played by Clyde Sutcliff joins it. Happy Birthday is an exception, it's the only track without guitars and singer Knight.
In addition, the lyrics were very critical. In the song Train they criticize the then US President Bush and in US History Piper expresses his anger over American foreign policy. The song Happy Birthday is, as the title could possibly suggest, no ordinary birthday song . The track was written from Piper's point of view for his unborn child, who was aborted and therefore could not have an actual birthday. A bizarre, but still sad and above all very moving mood that runs through the entire song, supported by a contemplative piano melody. The track Someday is about coping with emotional unhappiness, the fourth single Angel tells of the love of a mother for her son who lives on the street and who only keeps his will to survive because he knows that she believes in him.

Opinions about We the People varied widely.
RPonline and Pooltrax compare Flipsyde with the Black Eyed Peas and Linkin Park and praise the album as a successful crossover of rock, rap and Latin. Piper is described as a strong MC and the lyrics are in need of improvement and critical. "Overall, a well-rounded album by the three from sunny California that you should listen to", wrote Moritz Tillmann, the author of RPonline, ignoring the fact that there were four of Flipsyde at the time. Sputnikmusic writes that it is good to hear different hip-hop than usual and that We the People surpasses almost all other hip-hop albums.
Laut.de, on the other hand, criticizes the style as lacking in identity: "The mixture of everything may not have existed before, this album provides the reason why, it just sounds too artificial," wrote Alexander Engelen.
