In 1952, George Stephen invented the first kettle grill by converting the undersides of two buoys into a grill with a lid. At that time he was working in his father's company, the Weber Brothers Metal Works , which had been founded on May 8, 1893. Until the invention and establishment of the kettle grill, brick grills were mainly used in North America and were permanently installed. The mobile kettle grill also offered the option of indirect grilling .

Because the grill was selling well, Stephen started the company's "grill division". In the late 1950s, Stephen paid off the Weber Brothers and became owners. Soon after, he changed the company name to Weber-Stephen Products Co. to. During this time he concentrated on the production and sale of the “Weber Kettle Grills”.

On July 15, 1999, Weber-Stephen Deutschland GmbH was founded as a subsidiary of the American parent company. There are further company branches in Switzerland, Austria, Turkey, Hungary, Poland and Russia, Australia, Hong Kong and Mexico.

In March 2004 Weber bought competitor Ducane , which had specialized in the production of gas grills . Weber stated that he wanted to continue the production of Ducane grills in Barnwell ; however, it was ultimately outsourced to China .
