location

The building is located in the northern part of the historic Quedlinburger Neustadt and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . It is registered as a prison in the Quedlinburg monument register.

Architecture and history

The prison complex was built around 1840. The massive brick building is monumental with a fortress-like appearance. This impression is reinforced by a horizontal band . The eaves protrude far, the roof itself is only very flat and is reminiscent of the Italian fortress architecture.

The prison building is set back from the road to the west. The street-side property is delimited by a wall made of rubble, including a gate, which represents the northern end of the medieval Quedlinburg city fortifications.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the lower floors of the former prison were refurbished and are used for various social purposes by the workers' welfare (including clothing store , table ). In the rear area there is a new building built on the city wall for social and charitable use.
