Weed is a city in Siskiyou County , California . It is located 16 km north of Mount Shasta and had a population of almost 3,000 in 2000. The town is named after Abner Weed, who took advantage of the strong winds in the area to dry wood. In the 1940s, the place advertised to be the largest sawmill in the world.

In September 2014, the city was hit by a major fire that destroyed or seriously damaged more than 150 buildings.
