The fortified church Friesau is located in the Friesau district of the city of Saalburg-Ebersdorf in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia .

location

The fortified church is located in the southeast Thuringian slate mountains in the Schleizer and Lobensteiner Oberland . It is located in the middle of the village.

history

The Romanesque fortified church with choir tower and nave was first mentioned as St. Leonhardt's church in 1345. Between 1415 and 1440 it was extended in the late Gothic style. The high slate roof and the tower have a projecting edge and a verschiefertes completion of levels.

Art treasures in the house of God

The art treasures include:

  • three late Gothic winged altars,
  • the main altar from 1447 with the crucifixion group in the center shrine Maria and pre-Reformation patron saints: Abbot Leonhard on the right and Bishop Nikolaus on the left. Under the central shrine in the predella Christ and his twelve disciples ,
  • valuable side altars from the 15th century,
  • to the right of the pulpit from 1699 is the relief of Saint Martin , which belongs to a seven-figure altar fragment. The patron saint of the French is a saint often found in Thuringian churches . He cuts off a piece of his cloak for a beggar with his sword.

rarity

The communion chalice , which the mayor of Schleiz donated in 1509, repeats the figures of the main altar.
