Weißenbach (Ahrntal)
Weißenbach ( called Weißnbåch in dialect , Italian Rio Bianco ) is a fraction of the municipality of Ahrntal in South Tyrol ( Italy ). The village has about 580 inhabitants (as of 2016) and is located at 1350 m above sea level in the Weißenbachtal , a side valley of the Ahrntal . Weißenbach is close to the Speikboden ski area .
Stone Age bog finds of the Schöllberg-Göge, a Talschluss Alm , indicate an early use of the area by humans.
The Weißenbacher parish church, consecrated to St. Jacob , was first mentioned in 1434 and rebuilt in late Gothic style in 1479/80 . The head of St. James on the round keystone of the choir vault is attributed to Friedrich Pacher , the exterior fresco of St. Christoforus from the late 15th century is a work of the Pacherschule. In 1957/59 the church was expanded to include a western extension based on a design by Erich Pattis , who also planned the new cemetery.
Tobogganing and ski tours are ideal in Weißenbach in winter . A few meters from the village is the Weißenbach sports field. A toboggan run also starts there: it leads to the so-called Wurmtaler Almen (Marxegger-, Innerhofer- and Pircheralm), which are located at the foot of the Zillertal Alps . The Wurmtaler Almen can only be reached by hiking.
