Friedrich Pacher (* around 1435 probably in Neustift , Tyrol , † after 1508 in Brunico ) was one of the most important painters of the Gothic in the second half of the 15th century in the southern Tyrol .

Life

Few facts have come down to us about the life of Friedrich Pacher. So it is e.g. B. not possible to prove a relationship with the painter and carver Michael Pacher , who worked at the same time , although this is very likely. The only thing that is certain is that he lived in Bruneck , since he is named as a citizen of this city in 1474 and regularly appears in the city's invoices and documents between 1478 and 1508. Initially an employee of Michael Pacher, he parted ways with the St. Wolfgang Altarpiece in 1481 and had his own workshop in Bruneck since around 1478. He owned his own house there, was a church provost from 1489 to 1492 and city judge in Bruneck from 1503 to 1508. After its heraldic animal, the lion, it was also called the Lebenpacher . One of his students was Marx Reichlich .

Friedrich Pacher created panels and frescoes in the Gothic style. He was influenced by Michael Pacher and the art of northern Italy. With the exception of a single signed picture, it is not always possible to distinguish between works he created himself and those from his circle that are subsumed under his name. In contrast to Michael Pacher's art, his works are characterized by a certain wooden acerbity , as Semper expressed in his book Michael and Friedrich Pacher (1911). His figures are not integrated into the room, but are in the foreground in front of a stage-like spatial representation. Typical is his way of depicting three-dimensional motifs with graphic means (influence of the master ES) and his strong shortening of perspective.
