The Weißeritzgymnasium is a Saxon high school in the Deuben district of the large district town of Freital in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district . For several years the facility was the largest grammar school in Saxony. In the past school years, around 100 teachers have been employed at the Weißeritzgymnasium every year, teaching over 1100 students. The school is run by the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district.

Educational offer

The grammar school offers different school-specific profiles from grade 8 onwards. These have been tried and tested over many years and tailored to the specifics of the grammar school. In profile lessons up to grade 10, subject-related and interdisciplinary teaching content is implemented in order to actively support the students in developing important skills.

A special feature of the school is the interdisciplinary teaching, which uses the content of a specially created, internal school curriculum for “project work” and “growing up”. The class leader and the subject teacher work with the class on various aspects of work efficiency, teamwork, high competence development, the implementation of long-term projects, etc. These lessons support the students in their scientific work. In grades 5 to 8, the basics for creating a technical paper are laid. The pupils use this in the following two school years to independently prepare a technical work and defend it as a complex achievement.

The first foreign language from grade five is English . From year six onwards, French , Spanish and Latin are offered as a second foreign language. Spanish or Russian are possible as a third foreign language from grade 8. Latin can also be taken as a school-specific profile or within a study group from grade 8 and, like a second foreign language, leads to the Latinum.

The grammar school emerged in its current form in 1992 from EOS Freital after reunification . Since 1991 two of the three school buildings have been renovated. For the Montessori pedagogy in grade 5 introduced in the 1992/1993 school year, the high school received the Bertelsmann Foundation's “Innovative Schools” special prize worth 10,000 marks from over 300 applicants . The award received national and international attention.

From the school year 2000/2001 the grammar school exchanged a branch with the primary school in Deuben. The Poisental branch was henceforth the place of instruction for the primary school students, while grades 5 to 7 of the grammar school were taught in the former primary school building. The high school was directly affected by the Elbe flood in 2002 because the school grounds are located directly next to the Weißeritz . All school buildings were damaged.

In 2003 the Kreisgymnasium Freital-Deuben merged with the Manfred-von-Ardenne -Gymnasium in Freital- Zauckerode and thus became the largest grammar school in Saxony with over 1500 students. Due to the low birth rate in the 1990s, however, the number of students fell again in the following years. The Weißeritzkreis took over the sponsorship from the city of Freital. The district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains has been responsible for the school since the 2008 district reform .

When the main building of the grammar school was 100 years old, the district grammar school was given the name “Weißeritz grammar school”. In the years that followed, a new three-field sports hall was built on a parking lot next to the main building, and the Pestalozzi- and Johannisstraße school buildings were renovated and made accessible to the disabled. A single-field gym was built next to the Johannisstraße school section. It replaced a previous building from GDR times. The general renovation of the main building, which took about one year, began in February 2018 and was completed in summer 2019.

Since the 2012/2013 school year, six new fifth grades have been formed each year, so the facility will reach its capacity limit in the long term. In the 2013/2014 school year, for the first time since 2007, more than 1,000 students were taught at the grammar school. An extension of the Weißeritzgymnasium or the construction of a new school was rejected by the Freital city council for financial reasons. Instead, a new grammar school was built in Wilsdruff .

Since the grammar school was founded in 1992, the school principals have been:

  • 1992–2006: Uwe Dreske
  • 2006–2015: Renate Kühnel
  • 2015–2016: Eva Engelhardt
  • since 2016: Jeanette Gernat

Investments

The grammar school has three school buildings. The listed main building Krönertstraße is the seat of the school management and mainly the classroom for grades 11 and 12. The main building has the dining room, a cafeteria and the school auditorium . The Pestalozzistraße school building is in the immediate vicinity of the main building. Grades 8 to 10 are taught here. Grades 5 to 7 study in the Johannisstrasse school building, which is a little further away from the main building. The Johannisstrasse building was constructed using a prefabricated construction method (“Dresden” type), while the other two buildings were built before 1910.

The gym in Rudeltstraße in Niederhäslich , which had been in use for many years and was in need of renovation , was demolished after the inauguration of the modern three-field sports hall, which was built right next to the main building of the high school. In addition to the single-field sports hall on Johannisstrasse, new sports and leisure facilities were built by 2013.
