The Weideninsel is an island in the Isar in Munich , which was newly created in the course of the renaturation ( Isar plan ) of the course of the river between Wittelsbacherbrücke and Reichenbachbrücke at river kilometer 149 on the right (southeast) of the valley path . The construction work in this section with the construction of a new branch of the Isar took place between 2009 and 2011. When laying out the island, a group of eight full-grown willows was used as a basis , the crowns of which largely cover the surface and which gave the island its name. The willow island is intended as a retreat for birds and small animals during the breeding season and can be entered all year round, with the exception of the breeding season in spring.

The island is located in the Au district or in the Untere Au district of the Au-Haidhausen district , right on the border with the Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt district, Glockenbachviertel district, which runs along the Isar valley path . It belongs to the district of Munich, p. 7 (Untergiesing) . The border to the neighboring district of Munich, p. 6 (Sendling, Isarvorstadt) runs on the left (northwest) bank of the river. On the right bank are the spring plants with the Munich city nursery.

The willow island is 66 meters long in the direction of the river and has a maximum width of 27 meters. The area is estimated at around 0.15 hectares or 1,500 square meters.

As one of more than 120 projects for crossings to be implemented (bridges and underpasses), the Klenzesteg was discussed for years, which was supposed to connect the Glockenbachviertel and the Au district as a pedestrian walkway near the Weideninsel with a span of about 150 meters. An early planning variant provided for a bridge pillar on the Weideninsel, later planning variants no longer had any direct reference to the Weideninsel, but only provided for a position at the height of the Willow Island. In July 2019, the Klenzesteg was completely removed from the list of urban construction projects.
