On the 25 hectares of vineyards in the town of Dorsheim 70 percent Riesling and around 10 percent Pinot Gris , Pinot Blanc , late night and Frühburgunder grown. The best locations are Dorsheimer Goldloch , Pittermännchen and Burgberg . Around 150,000 bottles of wine are produced annually.

history

Layen Castle is located on a rocky ridge in the Trollbachtal on the lower reaches of the Nahe and was built in the 11th century. The Diel family has been involved in viticulture in the Nahe valley since the 16th century. In 1802, during the occupation of the Nahe region by Napoleon , Johann Peter Diel (1750–1811) acquired the castle and winery from Baron Wolfgang Heribert von Dalberg , which the family had leased for decades.

Well

The castle estate has a vinotheque , a wine press , a castle cellar with a barrique cellar from the time the castle was founded, a tank cellar in which the steel tanks are housed and an area for the most expensive rarities of the estate.

Locations

The best locations of the winery are Dorsheimer Goldloch , Pittermännchen and Burgberg . In the historical location map from 1901, the vineyards in the Prussian part of the Nahe region were divided into three property tax categories. The first-class vineyards already included the three top vineyards Goldloch, Burgberg and Pittermännchen, whose largest owner is now Schlossgut Diel. In 1997 the VDP (Prädikatsweingüter der Nahe) stipulated in their site statute that these vineyard names may only be used in conjunction with the Riesling grape variety and subject to strict quality criteria.

Awards

The winery has been a member of the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries (VDP) since 1993 , with the owner Diel acting as chairman for the Nahe wine-growing region, and known for its dry and slightly bitter white wines, which are matured in large barrels made from Hunsrück oak and stainless steel tanks. In 2004 the wine magazine Vinum included the estate in its list of the 111 best wineries in the world. In 2006, 2007 and 2011 the winery was awarded by Wein-Plus for the collection of the year . Armin Diel is the only local grower to be a (founding) member of the "German Barrique Forum" winegrowers' association.

criticism

Since the 1990s Diel has been editor-in-chief and publisher of the Gault Millau Wine Guide together with Joel B. Payne . In 2009 he resigned from this position because fellow winegrowers accused him of an inadmissible amalgamation of marketing and wine journalism. The wine guide wanted to charge money for future reviews. Diel, on the other hand, saw himself as a victim of “a campaign”.
