The Wendy is a horse magazine for children (especially girls) of about seven to eleven years. The magazine appeared for the first time in Germany in June 1986 with a circulation of 41,000 copies. In the meantime it was published weekly by Egmont Ehapa Verlag GmbH at a price of mostly 2 euros (previously 3 DM). From 1989 it was published every 14 days, from 1996 weekly, from 2009 again every 14 days and since 2016 it has been published every three weeks and costs 4.20 euros. Every time the booklet comes with extras such as pen sets, jewelry, stickers, accessories or posters. The magazine has developed steadily, in the early years the editorial focus was clearly on riding and horses. In the mid-1990s, other topics such as other animal species and active animal welfare were added. The magazine can now also be understood as a lifestyle magazine for young, horse-loving girls. Stories with the main character Wendy are also published as radio plays , computer games and TV series. A film was made in 2017.

content

Most of the magazine consists of the Wendy comic . There, the heroine Wendy Thorsteeg experiences numerous adventures with her horses. At the beginning of the issue, a self-contained comic was published each time; the Wendy Thorsteeg comic, which is continued in each issue, has only appeared since the early 1990s. The photo story also makes up a larger part of the magazine. Mostly it's about love, friendship and adventure. Of course, there are also numerous horses every time. There are also information pages for readers, for example horse breeds are presented here.

history

The series started in 1986 with seven issues. In 1987 and 1988 the magazine appeared monthly, from 1989 biweekly. In 1996 the frequency was changed to a weekly publication, from 2009 onwards Wendy appeared again every two weeks; since 2016 it has been available every three weeks. Initially, the main comics in each issue were independent. Occasionally a little story from the Ulmenhorst riding stables appeared as a page filler.

In 1991 the character of Wendy Thorsteeg was introduced, which appeared in every second edition until 1995. Since the end of 1995 there have only been stories with Wendy.

Wendy Thorsteeg is a 15 year old girl. She owns a Hanoverian mare , Penny , whose foal is Dorinka , a Hanoverian stallion named Domino , who she had to give up when the care of three horses became too much for her, and a western mare, Miss Dixie . The horses are at Rosenborg Stud, which belongs to Wendy's father Gunnar and her mother Heike. Before Gunnar Rosenborg opened, he owned Lindenhöhe. But this stud burned down in a fire. Later, a western ranch is built on the site of the burned down stud.

The last page

There's a comic strip on the last page. At first Kalle Kohldampf could be seen here, later Racker with his pranks. Since the beginning of the 1990s you can read about Lord and the tousled Lauser, sometimes also about the Shetland pony Rocki and the cold-blooded Strato.

Extras

The magazine always comes with a little surprise. In the past, for example, there was an iron-on image, stationery, a template or a hair clip, but sometimes there was also a special issue with an extra comic: Bille and Zottel and others.
