Text and music

text

The song deals with a young woman who goes to relax in a typical pub in the evening, where men drink beer at the bar and play skat at a table . They see it as easy prey, which they can defeat by playing cards. However, she turns the tide and wins the game, she also impresses with her ability to drink and confirms in the refrain:

"When you think, you think, then you just think, you think
A girl can't do this Look into my
eyes
And then look into my face
If you think you think then you just think, you think
You have an easy game
But I know what I want.
So just laugh at me
Because in the end I'll laugh at you. "

In the stanzas she sings about the bar situation and the protagonists very vividly. The pub itself is the place where the men at counters and tables / wipe the foam from their lips and she could already hear them screaming from outside. The game of Skat is also shown very graphically, first describing the order of the stimuli during the game and then their victory:

"And I played and drank with them the
whole night
18, 20, 2, 0, 4, and I pass
Contra, Re, and then to the checkout.
They went very pale because I won the game
That was too much"

The game goes on into the night, until the landlord had already put up the chairs and, like another guest, fell asleep at the bar. The protagonist finally goes home, but at the end of the day she agrees to meet a card player for a “revenge” the next evening.

music

The music is in a country music style typical of Gunter Gabriel. It begins with a percussion , which is then joined by a guitar accompaniment that accompanies the song throughout.

Publication and response

Werding was one of the teenage idols of her time after her number one hit On the day when Conny Kramer died and her first television appearance on the ZDF hit parade in 1972. At the time of publication she was 15 years old and was loved by the young people with her German versions of well-known English-language songs such as Eve of Destruction (A rotten tree does not bear good fruit) or Where Have All the Flowers Gone (Tell me where the flowers are) and her anti-war songs, which appeared on her first album In deep trauer and which made up a large part of her success afterwards.
