Vera Konstantinovna Romanova (* April 11 . Jul / 24. April  1906 greg. In Pavlovsk , † 11. January 2001 in New York City , USA ) was a member of the House of Romanov-Holstein-Gottorp .

Life

Vera was the youngest child of Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinowitsch Romanow (1858–1915) and his wife, Princess Elisabeth of Saxony-Altenburg (1865–1927) , daughter of Prince Moritz of Saxony-Altenburg and Princess Augusta Luise of Saxony-Meiningen.

Vera, a great-granddaughter of Tsar Nicholas I , was only an " Imperial Princess" from birth . Tsar Alexander III had modified the house laws of the Romanovs on July 14, 1886 by restricting the title "Grand Duke" or "Grand Duchess" to the children and grandchildren in the male line of a tsar. Distant descendants have since carried the title "Imperial Prince" or "Princess".

Vera lost many family members during the war and the October Revolution . Three of her brothers were murdered by the Bolsheviks and one brother was killed during a battle in Lithuania . At the age of 12, she came to Sweden on the Swedish ship Angermanland in October 1918 , together with her mother, her brother Georgi , and her nieces and nephews. She trained as an interpreter in Lausanne . After that she lived in her mother's castle in Altenburg. Princess Vera was the patron of many Russian exile organizations in Germany. a. of the Brotherhood of the Holy Prince Vladimir . In 1945 she fled from Altenburg before the advancing Red Army on foot to the American zone of occupation . After that she lived in Hamburg , where she sang in the church choir and stood up for Russian refugees. After leading the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Russian Church in Bad Kissingen in July 1951 , she emigrated to the USA in December 1951 , where she again took over the patronage of many Russian organizations and died in New York City in 2001 . She had remained unmarried.
