In the river valley of the Were, which stretches from Tbilisi to the village of Manglissi, an unbroken chain of settlements has settled, including Bagebi, Achaldaba, Zqneti, Betania and Zweri. Part of the Were in Tbilisi flows through a series of corrugated steel tunnels under the highway between Warasischewi and Tamarashvili Streets, which was built between 2009 and 2010.

The Were has a length of 45 km and a catchment area of 194 km 2 . The river is fed by melting snow, rain and groundwater. It is characterized by periodic flash floods , such as one on June 14, 2015 that caused severe damage to Tbilisi’s infrastructure, including the zoo, and killed at least 19 people.

According to records of the Georgian scholar Prince Wachuschti from the early 18th century, the were in the past was known as Skwireti or Skoreti (სკვირეთი, სკორეთი). These hydronyms appear in medieval Georgian chronicles, including one by Leonti Mroweli from the 11th century. There are several cultural monuments and leisure facilities in the Were river valley . While the Betania Monastery of the Birth of the Holy Mother of God is close to the source, the Lurdschi Monastery , the Tbilisi Zoo and the Msiuri children's amusement park are located at the mouth in the Tbilisi catchment area.
