Bernreuther received chanson lessons from Heinrich Pohle and Fania Fénelon . For the 4th GDR Chansontage he received the GDR Writer's Association Prize. Bernreuther sings partly in his Franconian native dialect and mixes “folksong-like structure with intellectual thinking”. In the 1980s he made radio and television productions in Rund , Liedercircus '86 , Pfundgrube and Liederkarussell, among others . From 1982 he performed with Stephan Krawczyk and the Liedehrlich group . Bernreuther was on tour abroad, including in Romania. He studied at the Leipzig Literature Institute from 1979 to 1982 and since 1981 has held a teaching position for acting and soloist profiling at the Leipzig University of Music and is part of the Leipzig song scene . His adaptations of songs by Bulat Okudshawas were published in 1985. Bernreuther was artistic director of the chanson days in the Michaelstein monastery for 15 years and from 1984 deputy chairman of the “Section Chanson and Songwriters in the General Directorate of the Committee for Entertainment Arts of the GDR”, responsible for further training. In this function, he installed a two-year course for songwriters from 1986, each consisting of 14-day intensive courses, the so-called "Songwriting College of the GDR". Participants included Maike Nowak , Frank Viehweg , the Dietze song company and Norbert Bischof. Bernreuther was also referred to as the "guru of East German songwriters" because he tried like no other to recruit critical voices. His students include Hubertus Schmidt , Stephan Krawczyk, the Liedehrlich group, Dieter Kalka , Joachim Schäfer , Maike Nowak, Andrea Thelemann and Norbert Bischof.

Today Bernreuther lives in Berlin.
