Werner Boie (born September 26, 1901 in Dresden ; † October 6, 1978 there ) was a German engineer and university professor who worked primarily in the field of combustion , combustion technology and heat technology .

Life

Werner Boie was born in Dresden in 1901. From 1908 to 1912 he attended the citizen school in Dresden, then from 1912 to 1921 the secondary school in Dresden. After graduating from school, he studied mechanical engineering at the Dresden University of Technology from 1921 to 1926 .

After completing his studies, he initially worked for many years in industry as a test engineer, site manager, senior engineer, deputy operations director and operations director at AG Sächsische Werke Böhlen and at the Espenhain power station . Here he was involved in a number of important technical innovations, such as B. the first radiant superheater in the world (1931), the first "Schotten" superheater in the world ( Bohlen power station , 1939) and the first hyperbolic cooling tower in Germany. His doctorate in 1935 took place while working.

On April 1, 1950, Boie took over the chair for heat engineering and heat management at the mechanical engineering faculty of the TH Dresden and became director of the institute of the same name. He held this chair for 16 years until his retirement in 1967. During this time, his research activities fell, especially in the field of combustion and combustion calculation. Following up on the work of Richard Mollier , Boie developed, on the basis of scientific principles, generally applicable, dimensionless formulas and diagrams that were not tailored to a specific fuel, as well as statistically recorded, empirical parameters that made the work of practical users in industry much easier. As a particularly application-oriented tool, he developed special slide rules for combustion technology.

His book From Fuel to Flue Gas , published in 1957, quickly developed into a standard work on combustion technology in West Germany as well. Next-actuated Boie almost 100 other publications, including contributions to the Paperback Engineering and Thermal workbook of VDI .

From 1959 to 1961 Boie was dean of the mechanical engineering faculty at the TU Dresden. He was also a member of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin . He received special recognition in 1968 when he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Magdeburg University of Technology .

Boie died in Dresden in 1978 after a brief illness. His grave is located in the city's Old Annenfriedhof .

Quotes

"Although mankind has known fire as a blessing or a horror for thousands of years, the physico-chemical process of combustion is still very little scientifically penetrated."

- Werner Boie, 1957, in a treatise on the tasks of science in the field of steam generation
