Werner Freitag (historian)

Werner Freitag (born September 23, 1955 in Rheda-Wiedenbrück ) is a German historian .

Werner Freitag completed his training as a textile laboratory assistant . He then studied history at the University of Bielefeld and economics at the Open University in Hagen . 1985 followed the diploma examination in Hagen, 1986 the Magister in Bielefeld. From 1986 to 1988 he was a city historian in Spenge , and in 1990 he received the Gustav Engel Prize for the work on the city of Spenge that was written during this period . In 1989 he received his doctorate under Wolfgang Mager and Klaus Schreiner in Bielefeld, after which he worked there from 1990 to 1996 as a university assistant in the early modern period. In 1991, Freitag received the Karl Zuhorn Prize for his dissertation. His habilitation took place in 1995.

In December 1996, Freitag was appointed professor for the history of the state of Saxony-Anhalt at the Institute for History at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg . Since April 1, 2004, Freitag has been teaching as professor for Westphalian and comparative history at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. Freitag is also the managing director of the Institute for Comparative Urban History . In 1997 Freitag was elected a corresponding member, in 2004 a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia , and since 2006 he has been the second chairman of the commission. Friday wrote works on the Westphalian and Saxony-Anhalt regional history as well as the history of the city. In 2016 he published a description of the Reformation in Westphalia.
