Klaus Schreiner (born April 22, 1931 in Jagstfeld , † June 28, 2015 in Munich ) was a German historian .

Klaus Schreiner received his doctorate from the University of Tübingen in 1961 with a thesis on social and social studies on the Benedictine convents in the eastern Black Forest . In a comparative study, he treated the Benedictine convents Hirsau , Reichenbach , Kniebis , Alpirsbach and St. Georgen . Schreiner intended to clarify the changes in the class structure in the five Benedictine convents from the 11th to the 16th centuries. The regional historical study and the methodical approach were inspired by his teacher Hansmartin Decker-Hauff . Schreiner's habilitation took place in 1969 at the University of Tübingen with the thesis "De nobilitate". The concept, ethos and self-image of the nobility as reflected in late medieval aristocratic tracts . The work went unprinted.

From 1973, Schreiner was an adjunct professor for historical regional studies and historical auxiliary sciences as well as deputy director of the “Institute for historical regional studies and historical auxiliary sciences” at the University of Tübingen. The research interest focused on Benedictine monasticism . From 1976 until his retirement in 1996, he taught as a full professor for medieval history at Bielefeld University . Important academic students of Schreiner include Jörg Rogge , Gabriela Signori and Gerd Schwerhoff . He turned down a call to Tübingen in 1982. Schreiner was a research fellow at the Historisches Kolleg in 1987/1988 , a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (1993/1994) and a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (1995/1996). Schreiner had been a full member since 1986 and a corresponding member since 2006 of the Historical Commission for Westphalia . In the summer semester of 1999 he was Otto von Freising visiting professor at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt . In 2003 he received the " Friedrich Schiedel Science Prize on the History of Upper Swabia " for his services to research into the history of Upper Swabia . After his retirement, Schreiner moved to Munich. He died there in 2015 at the age of 84.

Schreiner published numerous studies on the cultural and social history of medieval piety . Further research focuses were monasticism, the history of concepts and mentality, the history of education and knowledge, ritual and symbolic forms of behavior ( symbolic communication ), the effect and reception of the Middle Ages in modern times, historiography and hagiography as well as historical iconography . Schreiner has tried to decipher the meanings and messages of these symbolic actions in several works, for example on kissing or barefootedness. In 2003 he published an overview of art historical, sociological and political aspects of the veneration of Mary . On the occasion of his 80th birthday, Ulrich Meier, Gabriela Signori and Gerd Schwerhoff compiled and published six essays from 1996 to 2004 on the subject of symbolic communication.
