Werner Güttinger

Werner Güttinger (born July 23, 1925 in Heidenheim ; † 2013) was a German theoretical physicist who dealt with quantum field theory and the physics of dynamic systems.

Güttinger received his doctorate in 1953 from the University of Tübingen under Werner Heisenberg ( on the distribution-analytical treatment of quantum field theory ). He then worked at the Technical University of Aachen , at the Instituto de Física Teórica (IFT) in Sao Paulo (1954–1957), in Munich ( Ludwig Maximilians University and Max Planck Institute for Physics ), and professor at the University of Wyoming . From there he was appointed to the chair for information processing in the physics department of the University of Tübingen in 1971 and later headed the institute for information processing until his retirement .

Güttinger initially worked on questions of quantum field theory . He was one of the first to apply Laurent Schwartz 's theory of distributions to problems of renormalization theory. Later he dealt with the mathematical analysis of dynamic systems , especially applications of bifurcations and catastrophe theories (a sub-area of Hermann Hakens synergetics ).

His doctoral students include Jorge A. Swieca (1963), Alfred Rieckers (1969) and Dieter Armbruster (1985).
