Werner Goebel

Werner Goebel (born September 19, 1939 in Laurahütte ) is a German microbiologist .

Life

Goebel studied chemistry at the University of Tübingen from 1958 to 1963 . He received his doctorate in 1965 and then worked for three years at the University of California, San Diego (USA) with Professor Donald Helinski . After his habilitation in microbiology (1971) he was head of the genetics department of the Society for Biotechnological Research (GBF) in Braunschweig from 1972 to 1975 and at the same time professor of biochemistry at the Technical University of Braunschweig . From 1974 to 2007 he held the chair for microbiology at the University of Würzburg .

Goebel is a piano player who performs at ceremonies at the University of Würzburg (often together with his teacher Enikő Török from the Würzburg University of Music).

Act

Goebel published more than 350 articles in international journals, mainly on the molecular biology of the pathogenic bacteria Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli .

For his work on the cloning and hemolysing of Escherichia coli , he received the Robert Koch Prize in 1983 and the ASM Lecture Award of the American Society for Microbiology in 1984 . On June 1, 2006, he and Gerhard Gottschalk received the Emil von Behring Prize from the city of Marburg .

Werner Goebel is a member of various academies such as the Leopoldina (since 1988) or the American Academy for Microbiology . In 2007 he received the Leopoldina Medal of Merit .
