Club career

In Brasil

Diego began playing football at the age of six at Comercial FC Ribeírao Preto and then played for three years with Paulistinha São Carlos . At the age of eleven he was brought into the youth department of FC Santos . Then he was active for the professional team of Santos and won the Brazilian championship in 2000 and 2003 .

FC Porto

In the summer of 2004 Diego moved to the Portuguese first division club FC Porto for a transfer fee of around eight million euros , where he was supposed to replace Deco, who had migrated to FC Barcelona . But here it was only used irregularly.

In the summer of 2006, Diego moved to Werder Bremen in the German Bundesliga for around six million euros and signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2010. He replaced Miroslav Klose , who moved from 1. FC Kaiserslautern to Bremen in 2004 for five million euros , as the most expensive transfer in the club's history. At Werder, he followed Johan Micoud , who had moved to Girondins Bordeaux , in the playmaker position . In his first season at Werder, he scored 15 goals in 50 competitive games and prepared a further 16 goals. He has also received several awards for his achievements (see below ). In September 2007, Diego extended his contract, which was valid until 2010, for a further year until June 30, 2011.

Juventus Turin

Diego at Juventus Turin

For the 2009/10 season moved Diego to Italian giants Juventus in the Serie A . The Brazilian was given a contract that ran until June 30, 2014. The transfer fee was 24.5 million euros and could rise to up to 27 million depending on success. In his second competitive game for Juventus at AS Roma , he scored two goals for a 3-1 win. In the course of the season Diego came under criticism after an overall mixed season. Therefore, he played no role in coach Luigi Delneri's plans for the 2010/11 season and should be sold.

VfL Wolfsburg

In August 2010 Diego returned to the Bundesliga for VfL Wolfsburg . The Brazilian signed with the Wolfsburg, who paid a transfer fee of 15.5 million euros, a contract until 2014. Diego completed on 28 August (2nd Round) in 3: 4 home defeat against 1. FSV Mainz 05 his first Game for Lower Saxony and scored the goal for 3-0.

On the last day of the 2010/11 season, Diego left the team hotel of Wolfsburg, who was one point away from the relegation zone at that time, after learning at the team meeting that he would not be on the starting line-up. Diego was warned by VfL Wolfsburg and had to pay a fine. Media reported that the fine amounted to 500,000 euros. On June 24, 2011, VfL Wolfsburg announced that they would part ways with Diego. He was allowed to participate in team training, but was not considered by coach Magath for the VfL games.

Atlètico Madrid

On August 31, 2011, Diego moved to Atlético Madrid on loan for the 2011/12 season . He scored his first competitive goal on September 15, 2011 in a 2-0 win over Celtic Glasgow in the UEFA Europa League . On May 9, 2012, Diego and his team won the final in Bucharest . In the win over Athletic Bilbao he scored the 3-0.

Return to Wolfsburg

After his loan contract expired, Diego returned to Wolfsburg for the 2012/13 season . After no new employer had been found for the playmaker, coach Felix Magath decided to start the season with Diego. Diego also apologized in an open letter for his misconduct in May 2011 and thanked VfL for his second chance.

Return to Atlètico

On January 31, 2014, Diego returned to Atlético Madrid in the Primera División half a year before his contract ended in Wolfsburg . He signed a contract until the end of the 2013-14 season .

Fenerbahçe Istanbul

On May 27, 2014, Diego left Madrid and joined the Turkish champions Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In mid-July 2014, he signed a three-year contract with the Istanbul team.

Flamengo Rio de Janeiro

In the summer of 2016, Diego's contract with Fenerbahçe was terminated. He then turned his back on European club football and went to Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro . There he scored two goals in the first two league games. With the club he won on November 23, 2019 2019 the Copa Libertadores . One day later, the preliminary decision in favor of Flamengo was made in the Brazilian championship 2019 and Diego was able to celebrate this title as well.
