Professional and political career

Vitzenburg Castle around 1860

Werner Graf von der Schulenburg-Heßler initially served in the Prussian army as an officer candidate without the intention of becoming a professional officer. Therefore, he resigned from the military service with the rank of Rittmeister of the Reserve in order to devote himself to the management of his extensive inherited property. This consisted mainly of the Fideikommiß Vitzenburg with Weißenschirmbach (donated in 1801) and the Klein-Eichstedt and Oberschmon estates in the Querfurt district in what is now Saxony-Anhalt . The administration of his agricultural property meant that he also dealt with questions of agricultural policy in general, which led to his being appointed to the Prussian mansion for life in 1905 as a representative of the landowners in East Thuringia , although he was appointed to it because of the Revolution of 1918 conditional abolition of this Prussian constitutional body belonged only until 1918, see list of members of the Prussian manor house .

In addition to this political activity as a member of the manor house, he was also interested in charitable and social tasks as part of his office as commander of the Saxon provincial cooperative of the Protestant Order of St. John . In addition, he held office as treasurer of the Landgraviate of Thuringia.

Werner Graf von der Schulenburg had been married to Marie Senfft von Pilsach (1855–1946) since June 18, 1879 and had two daughters with her.
