Werner Haussmann (born November 12, 1941 in Nürtingen ; † August 11, 2010 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) was a German mathematician and university professor . The focus of his work was applied analysis .

Life

Haussmann studied mathematics and physics at the University of Tübingen and received his doctorate in 1969 from Hartmut Ehlich on Hermite interpolation in several variables, a topic from multivariate approximation theory . In 1971 he also completed his habilitation with Ehlich with a thesis on spline systems and initially taught as a lecturer, scientific adviser and professor at Bochum University until he was appointed to the then comprehensive university in Duisburg . Since 1975 - even after his retirement in 2007 - he has made a significant contribution to developing Duisburg into an internationally recognized center for applied analysis. He maintained numerous international contacts, was involved in the promotion of young domestic and foreign scientists and as a co-organizer of six international conferences on multivariate approximation - one in Duisburg in 1989, three following in Witten-Bommerholz (1996, 2000, 2002), and one in Oberwolfach (1988) and one as a NATO Advanced Research Workshop in Hanstholm / Denmark (1991). Werner Haußmann was repeatedly dean or managing director of mathematics, member of numerous committees of the University of Duisburg and from 2001 to 2003 its prorector for planning and finance.

Through his diploma thesis in Tübingen on Chebyshev approximation with exponential functions, Haußmann came into contact early on with the research areas of H. Ehlich and Karl Zeller , multivariate interpolation , approximation theory and potential theory , which he has been working on together with Zeller and other authors over the past two decades authored more than 20 joint articles in the late 1970s. Since the beginning of the 1980s, he has specialized in questions of harmonic approximation, which he then tackled with the Bulgarian research community around Borislav D. Bojanov. Altogether he wrote over 60 articles in mathematical journals himself or together with other authors. His doctoral students include Hans-Bernd Knoop and Heiner Gonska .
