Werner Heise (born May 12, 1944 in Litzmannstadt, today Łódź ; † February 21, 2013 in Munich ) was a German mathematician and university professor .

Life

After graduating from the Johanneum zu Lübeck in 1963, Heise studied mathematics and geography at the University of Hamburg from 1963 to 1968 for teaching at grammar schools. In 1969 he followed his doctoral supervisor Helmut Karzel as a research assistant at the University of Hanover . There he received his doctorate in 1969 with the dissertation Topological Möbius Rooms and the grade “summa cum laude”, a year later he completed his habilitation in mathematics with the habilitation thesis -affine rooms , was appointed department head and professor and appointed to the founding committee of the University of Oldenburg . In 1972 Heise went to the Technical University of Munich . Funded by the Italian Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche , he has held numerous visiting professorships at the universities of Modena , Perugia and L'Aquila . His research areas ranged from the fundamentals of geometry to combinatorics to the theory of error-correcting codes . Heise was a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Geometry from the time the journal was founded until 2013 . An obituary appeared there in the December 2013 issue.

Heise satirically dealt with the GDR with his (now defunct) website Laputa . The introduction to combinatorics , written together with Heinz-Richard Halder, was also published in 1977 by Akademie-Verlag Berlin , then East Berlin, but was partially removed from the libraries in the GDR after one of the books on pages 118 and 119 hid the Soviet Union's incriminating embassy had become known.

On the occasion of a colloquium for Heise's 65th birthday, he was awarded the Medal of Honor of the Institute for Mathematics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences .
