Werner Körbs

Werner Körbs (born April 14,  1906 in Weimar ; † January 30, 1984 in Cologne ) was a German sports scientist and university professor .

Life

Körbs studied at the German University for Physical Education in Berlin and graduated as a certified sports teacher in 1932. As an active athlete, he was successful in swimming as well as in athletics . In swimming he was several times Berlin university champion, in athletics he competed as a medium and long-distance runner for the Teutonia Berlin club and was second in the German championships in 1929 with Teutonia's 4x1500 meter relay.

In 1938 Körbs obtained his doctorate in Berlin, the subject of his work was On the Meaning of Physical Exercise at the Time of the Italian Renaissance . His doctoral thesis was later classified as "a standard work in sports history". From the same year he held a position as a scientific assistant at the Reichsakademie für physical exercises, which he officially held until 1945, but after the outbreak of the Second World War he was then employed as a soldier.

In 1946 and 1947 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Physical Exercise at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , and when the Sport University in Cologne was founded in 1947, he became a university professor and head of men's training there. In 1964 he was appointed professor of history and methodology of physical exercise and held this office until 1975. In addition, founded the Institute for Sports History at the sports university. After Carl Diem's death in mid-December 1962, Körbs initially acted as acting head of the sports university until the end of March 1965. From the renaming of the sports university to the German Sports University Cologne in 1965, Körbs was rector until 1967, from April 1971 to April 1972 he performed this function again. In 1973 he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .

During his research activity, Körbs dealt with, among other things, the collection of written sources on the pre- and founding history of the Cologne Sports University, ancient gymnastics and agonistics and an international classification of physical education. According to Christiane Stang-Voss , “close ties and relationships with Eduard Spranger and Carl Diem” shaped Körbs' work and work.

The sports historian Wolfgang Decker is one of Körbs' students .
