career

The young player, who came from VfL Solingen, went through the youth department at Union Solingen and got into the senior division via the amateur team. As early as 1973/74, the offensive talent - at that time still at Union Ohligs - was used under player-coach Horst Stockhausen in the last year of the old second -rate regional football league West . He completed 16 games at the side of fellow players Jürgen Lehr , Gerd Knoth , Horst Kuballa and Reinhold Nordmann and scored one goal. Ohligs finished in 15th place and had to play the association games in the 1974/75 round in the Niederrhein association league. The nomination points were not enough for the newly introduced 2nd Bundesliga. Operating under the name SG Union Solingen after the merger, Union won the championship in the Niederrhein Association League in 1975, finished second in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga, behind Bayer Leverkusen, and thus rose to the northern group of the 2nd Bundesliga.

Werner Lenz celebrated a successful debut in the 2nd Bundesliga 1975/76 with one goal on the first match day, August 9, 1975, in the 7-2 away win at Spandauer SV. He made 22 league games and scored three goals. Player- coach Stockhausen (30-1) was replaced in March 1976 by Herbert Burdenski and Union occupied 13th place in the table. In the second year, 1976/77, the club and the attacker Lenz did not make progress, the blue-yellows were only able to occupy 19th place, had experienced coach replacements and Lenz only made 16 appearances with two goals. Since the Bonner SC's license was withdrawn and Göttingen 05 and Wacker 04 waived their move, Union Solingen remained in the 2nd Bundesliga. For the 1977/78 round, Horst Franz took over the coaching position and Lenz catapulted himself into the top group of second division scorers with 19 hits in 28 games. From 1977/78 to 1982/83 the Union goalscorer met 90 times in the opposing second division goals. At Union he leads the ranking of second division shooters with 95 hits, ahead of Daniel Jurgeleit (59), Wolfgang Schäfer (44), Wilfried Seegler (40) and Demir Hotić with 32 goals. After the 1982/83 round, he ended his career in paid football.

After his professional career, he let his career end with low-class clubs in the Bergische Region .
