Werner Liersch

Werner Liersch (born September 23, 1932 in Berlin ; † August 23, 2014 ibid) was a German journalist , writer and literary scholar .

Life

Werner Liersch grew up in Berlin, where he trained as a toolmaker . He completed his German studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1953 to 1957 with a diploma in German studies. He then worked as a publishing editor and editor. From 1987 to 1990 he was a member of the jury of the Ingeborg Bachmann Competition in Klagenfurt. From 1990 to 1992 he was editor-in-chief of the magazine neue deutsche literatur .

Werner Liersch was the author of narrative and biographical works as well as radio features mainly on topics from German literary history; he also worked as an editor of anthologies .

Werner Liersch belonged since 1963 to the Writers' Union of the GDR and since 1982 the PEN -Zentrum the GDR on. Later he was a member of the Association of German Writers and the PEN Center Germany .

Liersch worked together with the writer Sabine Lange to come to terms with the Stasi past in the Hans Fallada Society. In 2004, together with other Fallada researchers, they founded the International Fallada Forum.

In June 2008, after his own source studies, he drew attention to the secret membership of the late writer Erwin Strittmatter in an SS police unit during the Second World War .

Liersch died of old age in his Berlin apartment in August 2014 .
