Werner Neuhaus (born November 1, 1897 in Burgdorf BE ; † August 22, 1934 in Lützelflüh ) was a Swiss painter, draftsman and graphic artist.

Life

After completing an apprenticeship in lithography, Neuhaus attended the painting class at the general trade school in Basel . A stay with Cuno Amiet from spring 1921 to early summer 1922 motivated Neuhaus to rent a studio in Binningen in autumn 1922 in order to be able to work undisturbed. In the course of 1924 Albert Müller , Paul Camenisch and Hermann Scherer planned an exhibition and working group Rot-Blau , an artists' association based on the "Brücke" model, which made the most important contribution to Swiss Expressionism that Neuhaus made after its founding joined as a fourth member on New Year's Eve 1924. In the summer of 1925 he worked with Scherer and Camenisch in the Mendrisiotto .

Neuhaus became the son-in-law of the Emmental poet Simon Gfeller through his marriage to Hedwig Gfeller (-1985) in 1926 . From 1927 Werner Neuhaus withdrew from the city's art life with the move to the Reckenberg near Rüegsau in the Emmental .

In the Grabenhalde near Lützelflüh , Neuhaus was able to set up a studio from 1929, which had been attached to the Gfeller House by the architect Ernst Bützberger (1879–1935). From 1930 Neuhaus worked in a completely new style that was based on the realistic painting of the 19th century. This also corresponded to the collector's taste, so that Neuhaus was now able to accept many orders for portraits, landscape paintings and still lifes. Neuhaus was now perceived as the painter of the Emmental. In 1929 and 1930 he received a federal art scholarship , in 1933 he won a third prize at the Concours Calame.

On August 20, 1934, Neuhaus was on his way home by bike with drafts of the glass windows for the Church of St. Blasius in Rüegsbach , when he was run over by a car in Rüegsau. The order for the windows was carried out by Leo Steck in 1935 .
