Werner Stephan (fireworker)

Werner Stephan (born May 20, 1917 ; † August 17, 1957 in Berlin ) was a Berlin police fireworker .

Stephan wanted to join the police since his youth and after his training he made it up to the police chief . In 1937 Stephan was drafted into the Wehrmacht , where he trained as a fireworker. He returned from Soviet captivity in 1946 and resumed his work with the police.

In 1952 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class, for his achievements as a fireworker who rendered several thousand bombs , grenades and other explosive devices harmless .

On August 17, 1957, he had a fatal accident while defusing a Soviet grenade on the police detonation area in Berlin-Grunewald . His helper Helmut Kleiber and the driver Rudi Klatt were seriously injured. An honorary funeral was decided upon by the then Police President Johannes Stumm . The status of the honor grave of the city of Berlin was retained until 2011.

On August 23, 1957, several thousand Berlin citizens, honorary departments of the police, the Senate and the Association of War Disabled and Surviving Relatives, of which Werner Stephan was an honorary member, gave him their last conduct at the municipal cemetery in Tempelhof .

The then Governing Mayor of Berlin, Franz Amrehn , paid tribute to the deceased's services in his commemorative speech.

Werner Stephan lived with his wife and son in Berlin-Tempelhof .

On May 18, 1958, the first secondary school of the practical branch in Alt Tempelhof, Manteuffelstrasse, was named "Werner Stephan". His son attended this school.

His death created new methods of defusing the explosives.
