Werner Stumm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Werner Stumm (born October 8, 1924 in Wolfhalden ; † April 14, 1999 in Küsnacht ZH ) was a Swiss chemist , known for his contributions to the chemistry of water ( aquatic chemistry ) and geochemistry .

Life

Stumm received his doctorate in inorganic chemistry from the University of Zurich in 1952 and went to the USA in 1954, where he was Assistant Professor in 1956, Associate Professor in 1961 and Professor at Harvard University from 1964 to 1969 ( Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Chemistry). From 1970 to 1992 he was director of Eawag and full professor at ETH Zurich .

He was visiting professor at the universities of Bern , Bombay and Zagreb .

He was considered a leading scientist in aquatic chemistry and dealt with the rate of iron corrosion processes, kinetic laws for the oxidation of iron and manganese in water, the chemistry of weathering processes of minerals in contact with water, chemical aspects of environmental issues such as filtering water or how nutrients in water pollution promote algae growth.

In 1985 he received the Albert Einstein World Award of Science . He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering . He has been awarded five honorary doctorates , including from the Royal Stockholm University of Technology . In 1991 he received the Stockholm Water Prize and in 1998 the VM Goldschmidt Award .

He was also a US citizen from 1968. Stumm was married to Anna Maria Elisabeth Zollinger from 1952.
