West Warwick is a city in Kent County , Rhode Island , United States .
geography
The city is located on the southwestern edge of the Providence Metropolitan Area , a conurbation on the Atlantic coast with 1.5 million inhabitants around Providence , about 40 km southwest of Boston and 200 km northeast of New York . The city is well connected to road traffic, in addition to some state routes in and around the city, Interstate 95 runs just past it to the east.
The city is less than three miles west of Narragansett Bay on the west side of the Pawtucket River , across from Warwick on the other side of the river. Due to the peculiarities of the administrative structure of New England , the following villages are in the urban area of West Warwick:

In the 2000 census , 29,581 inhabitants were counted. Of these, just under 94% were white , and a little over 1% were African-Americans and Asians. The remainder was divided among several ethnic groups. The per capita income was US $ 20,250 and 11.2% of the population lived below the poverty line .
history
The area was before colonization by Europeans from the Indians - master of Narragansett populated. In 1642 a group around Samuel Gorton bought an area in southern Rhode Island from the Narraganset chief Miantonomi in the so-called Shawomet Purchase . In 1647 the settlers organized an administration under the name Warwick. West Warwick was founded as a separate city in 1913, it is the youngest city in the state.
Before 1913 the city was the industrial center of the larger city of Warwick. Like many other cities and towns in Rhode Island, the settlers benefited from the abundant hydropower, so that in the Warwick area, too, an industry of wool and textile production and iron processing could develop very early, mainly on the banks of the Pawtucket River concentrated. After the decline of the textile industry , West Warwick faced economic difficulties.
