What the Health is a documentary from 2017 , produced by Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn, the creators of Cowspiracy . While Cowspiracy deals with the effects of animal-based food production, What the Health deals with the health consequences of diets rich in animal products and their influence on chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease , cancer and diabetes .

synopsis

The film, advertised as "The Health Film That Health Organizations Don't Want You To See," follows Kip Andersen in interviews with doctors and other people about nutrition and health. Andersen also shows up when trying to contact representatives from various health organizations, but is dissatisfied with their answers. In further interviews he examines the alleged connection between the meat , dairy and pharmaceutical industries and various health organizations. The bottom line of the film is that serious health problems are a result of consuming meat and dairy products and that there is a conspiracy to cover it up.

reception

The documentary has sparked very controversial reviews.

For example, B. Moviebreak the movie positively on:

“In a profound, compact and sound manner, the report unmasked amorality and lobbying by the health care apparatus, animal feed industry and big pharma and, by the way, the protein myth. The facts are known; Their bundling is nonetheless an exciting digression into the medical factors that make even sworn carnivores bite the grass. "

- Movie break

and rates What the Health with 8 out of 10 points, in the user rating 7.7 out of 10. Also in the Internet Movie Database , the documentation achieved 8.3 out of 10 stars and was selected by Cinema for Peace as a candidate for the most valuable documentation of the 2018 ("Most Valuable Documentary of the Year") nominated. Furthermore, there has been positive criticism, especially from vegan interest groups:

“'What the health' follows in big footsteps, but the film knows how to convince with lots of facts and figures. Nothing stands in the way of building on the success of 'Cowspiracy'. "

- Vegan society

On the other hand, the film was criticized by numerous doctors, nutritionists and investigative journalists, some of them even from the vegan scene, for mixing causal relationships with correlations, "cherry picking" in scientific studies, use of biased sources, distortion of study results and use of "weak to nonexistent data" criticized.

In an article on vegan.com, the nutritionist and avowed vegan Virginia Messina accuses the film of focusing on the simplest arguments instead of relying on "unassailable reasons" for a vegan diet, such as animal suffering, environmental consequences and social damage are to be refuted. Due to its misinterpretation of scientific studies and false claims about the benefits of a vegan diet on the one hand (for curing chronic diseases, for example) and the negative consequences of consuming meat and dairy products on the other, the film would undermine the credibility of the vegan movement and thus ultimately do it a disservice.

"I suspect that in the long run, though, this kind of outreach sets our efforts back and slows our progress on behalf of animal rights."

"However, I suspect that in the long run this type of public relations will throw back our efforts and slow our progress in the interests of animal rights."

- Virginia Messina

Trivia
