When the Cat's Away ( dt. About: "When the cat's away ...") is a black and white animated film from 1929. It was led by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks from the Walt Disney Animation Studios produced. The main role in this short film is played by the famous cartoon character Mickey Mouse , together with Minnie Mouse and Kat Nipp ( called Tom Cat here ).

action

The film begins with Kat Nipp whistling a song in front of his house, getting drunk and shouldering his rifle . Then he goes hunting. As soon as Kat is gone, Mickey , his girlfriend Minnie and a few other mice appear and storm the house. There Micky and Minnie play the piano, while the rest of the squatters make music on various instruments and furniture. The mice especially enjoy playing the melody to Oh dear Augustine . Mickey and Minnie discover a pianola that lacks the perforated sheet. Micky promptly creates a new one by cutting a Swiss cheese into fine slices and building them into the instrument. As soon as the pianola starts jamming, the abandoned house parrot starts to sing (interestingly enough, it sounds like a cat). Then the mice steal a few records . One mouse has a plate stuck on its nose and does a pirouette , while another mouse uses its long tail as a pickup needle . Then the latter puts a filling funnel into his mouth as a kind of loudspeaker . The resulting “ record player ” actually plays music to which Micky kess dances. But the spinning mouse gets sick and turns slower and slower, so that the record begins to rattle. At the end, Mickey and Minnie dance a waltz that they play on the "mouse turntable" (they simply changed the records). The film ends with a hearty kiss from the two of them. Whether or not Kat returned and caught the mice remains to be seen at this point.

Production and background

When the Cat's Away premiered and released on May 3, 1929. On July 28 of the same year, the work was protected by copyright . The background music was recorded by Carl W. Stalling at Pat Power's Cinephone Studio in New York City . When the Cat's Away is one of five Disney films that premiered and released together in 1929 and enjoyed great success with audiences.

A special feature of the film are two supporting characters from the Disney world who have a cameo in When the Cat's Away , one of which is rarely seen. The first character is Minnie, who voluntarily lets Mickey kiss her for the very first time. The second character is Kat Nipp . The seedy tomcat made his debut in The Opry House (1929) , appeared a penultimate time in When The Cat's Away and a last time in The Karnival Kid . In When the Cat's Away he appears curiously under the name "Tom Cat", possibly Walt Disney was in the dark about the use and the identity of the character, which may have been expressed in the fact that Kat Nipp after "The Karnival Kid" never reappeared in Disney cartoons.
