The White River ( English for "White River") is a 816 km long right tributary of the Missouri River in the US states of Nebraska and South Dakota .
The name of the river is derived from the white-gray color of the water - a result of the eroded sand, clay and volcanic ash that the river carries with it. The catchment area is around 20,600 km². The river flows through a sparsely populated region of hills, plateaus and badlands .
The White River originates in northwestern Nebraska, in the Pine Ridge - Escarpment north of Harrison , at an altitude of 1462 m . It flows in a south-easterly, later in a north-easterly direction past Fort Robinson and north of Crawford . It crosses the border into South Dakota and flows through the Pine Ridge Reservation in a northerly direction. The Wounded Knee Creek then flows into the White River. Then this flows past the Badlands National Park . On the northern edge of the reserve, the White River swings east-northeast and southeast, forming the northern limit of the reserve and the southern limit of the Buffalo Gap National Grassland . About 15 miles south of Murdo , the Little White River meets the White River. The White River then flows in an easterly direction and ends in the Missouri River , which is dammed up to Lake Francis Case , about 15 miles southwest of Chamberlain .
