Who Killed Bruce Lee (abbreviated: WKBL ) is a band from Beirut , Lebanon , which is now based in Germany.

Band history

Who Killed Bruce Lee was founded in Lebanon in 2009. The band name is based on various in-band jokes and has no deeper meaning. The band around Wassim Bou Malham (guitar and main vocals), Hassib Dergham (keyboards), Malek Rizkallah (drums) and Pascal Sarkis (bass) initially appeared as a cover band . Their rehearsal room was an old storage room in the industrial area of Beirut. It was there that she created her first extended play , which consisted of five original pieces.

In 2015 the band performed in front of 3000 fans at the Red Bull SoundClash in Lebanon together with Mashrou 'Leila and the Lebanese stand-up comedian Nemr Abou Nassar . There the band caught the attention of music producer David Gappa , the former singer of H-Blockx , who wanted to make the band known in Germany.

After appearing at another event organized by Red Bul in Paris and a tour initiated by Gappa, the band quickly moved to Germany, where they received a management contract with Brainstorm Musikverlag. On October 19, 2015, the band was a guest at Circus HalliGalli , where they were allowed to jump out of a closet.

Her debut album Distant Rendezvous, produced in Berlin, was released in February 2016 on the NetMusicZone Records label . The concept album tries to retell the flourishing Lebanon of the 1950s, before the long civil war destroyed the country and brought cultural life to a standstill. In October 2016 the band performed at the Crossroads Festival of the WDR Rockpalast .

Music genre

The band's musical role models are the classics of the rock genre like Led Zeppelin , The Who and The Beatles , newer rock and indie rock greats like The Strokes and Queens of the Stone Age , hip-hop and electro acts like Jay-Z and LCD sound system , but also Arab artists like Abdel Halim Hafiz or Oum Kalthoum .
