The Vichra ( Russian Вихра , Belarusian Віхра ) is a right-hand tributary of the Sosh in the catchment area of the Dnieper in Russia and Belarus . The river begins in the Russian Oblast of Smolensk and flows into the Sosh in the Belarusian Mahiljouskaja Woblasz .
Course and Hydrography
The catchment area of the Wichra is the fifth largest catchment area of the Sosch basin. The river flows 119 km through Russia and 40 km through Belarus, its catchment area is divided as follows: 1870 km² in Russia, 360 km² in Belarus. Its annual water discharge at the mouth near the village of Ponarw ( Russian Понарв ) is 14.5 m³ / s.
The main tributaries are:
- left side: Traszjanka , Upakoi , Chalyasnjak and Vjalnjanka
- right side: call , Malachouka , Haradnja , Knjahіnja and Chernaya
Description of the river landscape
The valley is not very pronounced in the upper area and trapezoidal in the lower course. The valley has a width of 1.5 to 2 km. On both sides there are floodplains with a width of 0.4 to 0.6 km. The bed is twisted, the width of the river bed at low water levels is 15-20 m. In the lower reaches, the river bed is canalised over a length of 9.9 km. The river banks are often steep, very steep in the Mszіslau area.
history
In 1386, the army of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania defeated the army of the Russian principality of Smolensk in the Battle of the Vikhra .
