Reunion with Brundibar is a feature documentary by the German director Douglas Wolfsperger . It was released in theaters on December 4, 2014.
action
Annika and Ikra are members of the youth theater group “Die Zwiefachen” at the Berlin Schaubühne on Lehniner Platz . Like all “twofold” people, they come from difficult circumstances and use the theater work to process the breaks in their biographies. When they were supposed to rehearse the children's opera Brundibár , the enthusiasm was limited. Brundibár, composed by Hans Krása , was performed in the Theresienstadt ghetto and the background to the opera is difficult. But when they travel to Theresienstadt together with the Holocaust survivor Greta Klingsberg , who played the main role and sang at the time, one develops unusual friendship.
background
Brundibár was performed over fifty times in Theresienstadt, the last time in October 1944. The performances played an important role in the Theresienstadt propaganda film , as the cultural commitment of the Jews in the camp was intended to underline the apparent idyll of Theresienstadt. Afterwards, almost all those involved were deported to the Auschwitz extermination camp and murdered there. Greta Klingsberg is one of the few survivors of the original cast.
The theater project at the Schaubühne was initiated by Douglas Wolfsperger, who accompanied the rehearsals with the camera and established contact with Greta Klingsberg.
A special focus of the film is on how young people come to terms with German Nazi history .
criticism
“'Reunion with Brundibar' is a quiet, moving film. In addition, he raises the big questions of the Holocaust: How did this happen? Can it happen again What would i have done He gives an answer to another question. How can you tell about the Holocaust today? With films like this. "
