The WIENER is in Vienna appearing lifestyle magazine for men.

history

The WIENER was first in 1979 by Gert Winkler (from 1975 at the GGK Vienna founded), Michael Satke and Günther Lebisch. But after just four issues, the project failed due to funding.

In the same year Winkler founded Metro Verlag together with Hans Schmid, and in May 1980 the WIENER appeared again (see also WIENER - Zeitschrift für Zeitgeist ). The first editors-in-chief were Rudolph J. Wojta (1981–82) and Franz Manola (1982), the first art directors Michael Beran and Lo Breier . Christian Michelides was one of the first editors . In 1982 Michael Hopp was appointed editor-in-chief , then - together with Hopp - Markus Peichl . The WIENER is one of the first of the so-called “ Zeitgeist magazines”.

After the replacement of editor-in-chief Michael Hopp (1986, Peichl left 1985), many employees of the "WIENER" left Austria and pursued careers in the neighboring German-speaking area. For example the editors Lukas Lessing, Peter Praschl, Margit Mayer, Christian Seiler, Oliver Herrgesell, Andreas Fischer, Michael Kreissl, Gerald Sturz; the graphic designers and art directors Lo Breier, Gottfried Moritz, Judith Grubinger; as well as the photographers Paul Schirnhofer and Manfred Klimek .

From 1986 there was also a German edition of the WIENER in Munich, initially with a print run of 286,400 copies, which was discontinued in 1994. In 2000, under editor-in-chief Peter Mosser, WIENER was repositioned as a lifestyle magazine for men. Today, in contrast to the lifestyle magazines published in Germany, WIENER relies on an Austrian identity.

After a brief interlude by Maximilian Mondel from May 2008 to October 2008 - Mondel was withdrawn from his position after differences with the board of directors - Gundi Bittermann replaced him as WIENER editor-in-chief on an interim basis . In June 2009, Helfried Bauer took over the role of "sole editor-in-chief".

At the beginning of July 2015, the Styria Media Group sold the WIENER to Gregor Josel and Franz J. Sauer, who together run the content marketing agency Josel & Sauer GmbH. Since the takeover, the total reach has increased by 77%. In 2019 the total reach was 3.0%, before the takeover 1.7%.
