Franz Grasberger (born November 2, 1915 in Gmunden , Upper Austria , † October 25, 1981 in Vienna ) was an Austrian musicologist .

Life

Franz Grasberger studied musicology at the University of Vienna with Robert Lach and Robert Haas as well as church and school music at the Vienna Music Academy . In 1938 he started working for the Austrian National Library as an employee in the local music collection. Between 1954 and 1972 he lectured on music bibliography at the University of Vienna. In 1970 Grasberger became director of the national library and in 1974 chairman of the commission for music research , both of which he held until 1981. In 1978 he founded the Anton Bruckner Institute Linz (ABIL).

Franz Grasberger's main research areas were the organization of exhibitions and symposia as well as work on library problems and analytical-music-theoretical topics. His publications dealt with many of the most important German-speaking romantic composers such as Ludwig van Beethoven , Johannes Brahms , Anton Bruckner , Franz Schubert , Richard Strauss and Hugo Wolf .

Franz Grasberger was married to the music researcher Renate Grasberger and the father of the architect Helmut Grasberger (d. 1985).

He was buried in the Baumgartner Friedhof (Gr. T, No. 1946) in Vienna.
