The Wiggis is with a height of 2,282 meters and especially with its location close to the capital one of the most important mountains of the Swiss canton of Glarus .
The summit pair of Wiggis and Rautispitz is perceived by the valley as a coherent massif. But this does not correspond to the facts, because as soon as you go into the northwestern valley of the Rautialp, you notice that the Wiggis is the eastern end of a whole mountain range with Gumenstock (2256 m) and Schijen (2259 m, 2.6 kilometers west of Wiggis) and is therefore demarcated from the Rautispitz with a rock wall. The Höchnase stands prominently in the southeast in front of the summit in the direction of Netstal / Glarus .
On the western flank of the Wiggis, above the Klöntalersee , lies the Alp Aueren , on which the French fought against the army of the Russian general Suworow in 1799 . It is testified that the soldiers were not only killed by bayonets , but also by falling over the rocks.
The Wiggis can also often be seen in the photos of the originally democratic Glarus community .
Approach
Wiggis and Rautispitz are among the classic destinations in the network of mountain hiking trails in the canton of Glarus. The starting point for the ascent is Netstal , whose train station is 458 meters. An alpine path leads through the forest over a rock face that slopes down into the Klöntal valley to the aforementioned Alp Aueren. From there a steep mountain path leads to the top of the mountain ridge. Alternatively, in dry conditions, the ascent via the Rautispitz and the slightly exposed Wiggisnase is done. The starting point for this is the Obersee .
On the top of the mountain, the municipality border runs between Glarus Nord and Glarus (formerly between Näfels and Netstal ).
