Wijnne Barends BV , formerly Wijnne & Barends , is a shipping company in Delfzijl . It is one of the oldest still existing Dutch shipping companies.

history

The company was founded in Groningen in 1855 by Johan Herman Wijnne and Barend Cornelis Barends . Initially, the young company dealt with the chartering and technical support of ships, as an insurance and shipping agency, as well as stevedoring and storage. Wijnne & Barends acquired shares in some coastal sailors and the steamer Time is money . After the economic crisis of 1857 had been overcome, the company suffered a setback with the death of Johan Herman Wijnne in a train accident on June 2, 1868. Barend Cornelis Barends continued the business and would have been allowed to do so under his sole name from 1870, but kept the name of the co-founder in the company name. In the same year the last own ship investments were given up and as a result the company continued to operate without own ships or interests until 1952. New business opportunities arose from the completion of the Ems Canal between Groningen and Delfzijl in 1876, which is why the company opened an office in Delfzijl, which soon became the headquarters of Wijnne & Barends.

In the mid-1880s, Samuel Barends, Barend Cornelis' son, took over the management of the office in Delfzijl and after the death of his father in 1891, at the age of 26, he also took over the management of the office in Groningen. In the same year, Samuel's eldest son Barend Zacharias joined the management of the shipping company. Other members of the board were WF Oosterheert and G. Meijer. The 1930s were shaped by the global economic crisis and a series of personnel losses for the company . Oosterheert retired in 1932, Samuel died in 1936 and G. Meijer also died shortly before the start of the Second World War, so that the management was in the hands of Barend Zacharias during the war years.

After the end of the war, Wijnne & Barends opened a travel agency in Groningen in order to take part in the emigration of the early post-war years. In July 1952, the shipping company took over its first ship in over eighty years from the GJ van der Werff's Scheepsbouw shipyard in Westerbroek, the coaster Marie-Christine with around 500 loading tons. The following year, Barend Zacharias died unexpectedly and his third son Niels Barends continued the company with J. Sanders. The latter joined the company in 1919 at the age of 17 and has headed the Groningen office since 1932. The Fleet operated fleet grew in the following years strongly and included 1955 already 130 units. To do justice to this, the office in Delfzijl moved to a larger building. In the 1960s, the shipping company expanded its fleet by twenty new ships, which were divided into series of different load capacities. From 1965, the hulls of the ships were given their orange color, which is characteristic to this day.

In 1970, the Delfzijl terminal, which is mainly geared towards the import of forest products from Scandinavia, was built and now houses Wijnne Barends Logistics. Also in 1970, the second Marie-Christine, a ship with a box-shaped hold, started sailing. Two years later, Wijnne Barends was transformed into a corporation called Besloten vennootschap , with the shares remaining in the hands of the Barends family. Meanwhile, the branch in Groningen worked exclusively as a travel agency and expanded its activities to include travel and luggage services at Groningen Airport Eelde, while all shipping activities were brought together in Delfzijl. In 1979 Niels Barends died, after which his cousin Marinus Cornelis Nijhoff joined the management of the shipping company as the last member of the Barends family and continued this task until he retired in 1990. In the 1990s, Wijnne Barends built several series of ships again and sold his company at Groningen Airport. In 2000, Wijnne Barends moved into a new administration building at Delfzijler Hafen and expanded its cold storage facility there. At this time, the Amsterdam shipping company Spliethoff took a stake in the company and finally took over the majority stake in 2003.
